The Forth Naturalist and Historian (FNH) was set up in 1975 by several University and Central Regional Council (as it was then) staff. The aim was to provide a focus for activities and publications concerned with the wildlife, environment and heritage of the Forth area.

Today FNH activities are managed by an unpaid board of volunteers who publish the Forth Naturalist & Historian Journal and organize an annual Man and the Landscape conference which is usually held at Stirling University.

Relatively new endeavours are coordinating the Forth Valley Wildlife and Landscape Forum and a Historical and Archaeological Forum.

The annual Forth Naturalist and Historian journal has been published for over 40 years. The hundreds of authoritative articles have covered a diverse range of local topics dealing with anything from whooper swans to prehistoric rock art. Most volumes include annual local weather records and bird reports, plus book reviews and notes. It is hoped that these volumes provide a valuable successor to The Transactions of the Stirling Field and Archaeological Society which was published between 1878 – 1939.

Complete runs of the journal are kept by the University and local public and national libraries. The Editor welcomes offers of appropriate articles and can be contacted via the Secretary. (See Journal menu for publishing and purchase details.)

As well as the symposium and journal FNH has published a number of books and pamphlets of local interest. Several of these are in association with Clackmannanshire Field Studies Society (CFSS).

Further details of FNH activities can be obtained from the Secretary (fnh@stir.ac.uk).
